Only as Good as Your Kid Will Use the Book - Better As Discussion Points for Parents to Kids

The Growth Mindset Workbook looks like it would be an interesting book for kids to work through to help encourage them to think creatively, solve problems, and to learn that mistakes are okay. Both of my kid are very driven and motivated to work hard, but I wanted to encourage them to not be so hard on themselves when they make mistakes. Because they are so competitive - particularly my son - they tend to take losses somewhat hard and spend more time than I'd like getting frustrated for times when they don't get a perfect grade or can't figure out things right away. The growth mindset workbook didn't quite work in the way that I thought it would as both my kids almost took it as an insult that I would even think that they weren't thinking positively enough and they noted that the activities weren't quite relatable. My son in particular noted - "it's not that I think I'm a failure when I make a mistake on a test, but I'm frustrated that I made a silly mistake which could have been avoided". In addition, while some of the reading is helpful, some of the activities just didn't relate well with my kids. One in particular asked for advice you'd give to your two friends regarding this problem: "two of your friends are in an argument. One friend gave the other friend her favorite pencil, then decided she wanted it back, but the other friend wouldn't give it back. What is your advice to your friends?" Both of my kids were like "why would anyone argue over a pencil...? Are these kids in kindergarten or something?" I ended using the book not quite as intended, and instead would randomly ask my kids questions from it, but modified in a relatable way. The more I went through the book, I can't imagine a kid wanting to go through this workbook on their own, but I do think that it would be interesting for parents to utilize this book in everyday conversation. The workbook sections were just not really fun and unless your kid just like working out random questions with no real answers out on their own, this is both a little too kiddie and too mature for most kids at this age. Overall, while I like the concept of this book, it's something I will get discussion points from, but will not expect my kids to actually every fill out on their own.

A Must Have Life Tool

Well done!!! Well written!!! I recommend this book for parents, teachers, therapist of any kind and for adults to read for themself!!! Love it!!! Our society needs to be focusing more on this stuff!

Let’s grow!

Having a growth mindset is vital for all ages but this workbook makes it easy and fun for students to learn about what a growth mindset is and how to use it!

Should be required reading

I wasn't sure what to expect from the "Growth Mindset Workbook," as I hadn't heard the term before. It refers to how you can grow and change your brain with hard work. What a fabulous book this is for kids! It should be required reading for kids and their parents. A lot of it is about having a positive mindset, but it also addresses the way you think. It even incorporates self-care concepts like doing yoga. The chapters are about making mistakes, problem solving, being creative, setting goals, and persevering (keep going & don't give up). There are writing/journaling activities throughout the book. This is listed as being for ages 8-12, which seems appropriate. Yes, I do recommend this book!

Very helpful!

This book is very helpful for parents wanting to teach their children about understanding the way they think about things and why they do.

Growth Mindset can Overcome COVID Challenges

As we struggle with COVID, I find my students and grandchildren struggle even more. This book made things better - for them and for me. In small, bite-size pieces, this book challenges and empowers kids to build self-regulation as it encourages them to celebrate daily successes. The "projects" are easy-to-complete and fun. My grandchildren loved them, as did my 13 YO students. I recommend this book for all who want to bring hope and joy back into the lives of children. If you use only one to two things from this book, your money will have been well spent. But you won't. You will find that all of the activities are fun, worthwhile, and effective. I received an electronic version of this book as a gift from the publisher. The opinions are my own.
